GGC Kaufman Library has four streaming video platforms, each with films intended for regular curriculum-based instruction. For other uses, some of which are described on this guide in accordance with Title 17 of the Federal Copyright Act, Public Performance Rights (PPR) are likely required. Availability of films with Public Performance Rights vary among distributors, as noted below (as of 10-10-24, text adapted from NC State University Libraries):
Most of our streaming collections include some titles with PPR, except for films that we license through Swank. Below are the PPR details for our largest streaming databases. Please contact us to confirm for any use of streaming video other than regular curriculum-based classroom instruction or individual academic use for students, faculty and staff.
Academic Video Online (Alexander Street Press/Clarivate): Most films in this collection include PPR purchased or subscribed to include limited public performance rights, which includes permission for classroom showings, as well as on-campus or in-library public screenings, as long as no admission is being charged. *Excluding FILM PLATFORM and National Theatre titles. National Theatre titles can be used in classroom or lecture room for teaching purposes.
Kanopy: Some Kanopy films include PPR. To find films with PPR, you can either apply the PPR filter to search results or look for the PPR icon on a results page for a film. You can screen films that have PPR in group programming that doesn't charge admission. These rights extend to the film title and any images from the website that you want to use to advertise the screening, as long as source credit is given to Kanopy. If you'd like to hold a virtual screening, viewers need to log in to Kanopy individually so that their university credentials can be verified. Instead, you may want to consider watching the movie separately, then meeting up for virtual Q&A or discussion.
Films on Demand: Most titles include limited performance rights in educational settings but check with the library to confirm for specific films.
SWANK: All Swank titles exclude PPR and separate license must be purchased, if available
